Co-Chairman and
Board Director

Robert Oringer is a principal and board member of A.M.G. Medical Inc. He has been with A.M.G. for over 30 years, having joined Allan Goldenberg and Ben Topor as a Principal in 1989.

Immediately upon joining, Robert led the transformation and re-branding of A.M.G.’s US-based sister company, Can-Am Surgical, into Can-Am Care. Can-Am Care started as a distributor of blood lancets and grew over time to become the first private label (store brand) supplier of a full-line of diabetes care products to independent pharmacies, drugstore chains, and drug wholesalers throughout the United States.

In 1998, Can-Am Care was acquired by Selfcare Inc. (later re-named Inverness Medical). Robert joined the board of Inverness Medical from 1998 and served until 2001, the same year that Inverness Medical’s diabetes assets were acquired by Johnson & Johnson. And while he remained deeply involved during that period strategically at A.M.G., the operational leadership of the company was in the capable hands of Allan and Ben.

In 2001, Robert led the recruitment effort that brought Philip del Buey to A.M.G. as its General Manager (today its President). Philip worked to smoothly transition the company to a “professional management” approach after almost 30 years of having been under owner/operator management.

With Philip del Buey’s arrival, Allan, Ben, and Robert felt confident that A.M.G. had the leadership in place for future decades of growth. In a sense, Philip “liberated” Robert to pursue other US-focused ventures for A.M.G., including the buyback of Can-Am Care from Johnson & Johnson in 2002. From 2002 to 2012, Robert served as Chairman of CanAm Care (the company rebranded again) until it was acquired in 2012 by Perrigo.

Thanks to his extensive experience in the diabetes field, Robert brings a unique perspective in guiding development of novel products and approaches to the self-management of diabetes. Beginning in 2002 and continuing to this day, Robert is involved in leading investments in emerging diabetes companies.

In 2008, triggered by Robert’s personal family experiences, the teams at A.M.G. and CanAm Care began thinking about innovating rescue glucagon solutions for people using insulin who are at risk of severe hypoglycemia. Thereafter, a business plan was developed and a new company, Locemia Solutions, was founded under the leadership of Dr. Claude Piché while being incubated utilising A.M.G. resources. Locemia’s work was directed at making severe hypoglycaemia rescue simple through the development of an innovative, needle-free, glucagon nasal powder that is easy to teach, easy to carry, and easy to use. Locemia’s glucagon nasal powder assets were acquired by Eli Lilly in October 2015 and the resulting product is sold today around the world as BAQSIMI® (glucagon) Nasal Powder.

Robert’s focus on bringing innovative ideas to diabetes stems from the experience of raising his two sons who both live with Type 1 diabetes. Robert received his BSc degree with a concentration in Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Montreal, Quebec, with his wife Marla. Robert and Marla’s sons, Cory and Justin live in NYC and Los Angeles, respectively.
