TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) works by sending stimulating pulses across the surface of the skin and along the nerves. These pulses also help stimulate the production of endorphins, the body’s own natural painkillers. This makes TENS a great way to control pain without taking medication.
TENS is mostly used for nerve-related pain conditions, both acute and chronic. These conditions include:
-Arthritis -Tendonitis/Bursitis -Radiculopathy -Phantom limb pain -Spinal cord disorder -Low back pain -Carpal tunnel syndrome -Peripheral nerve injuries -Post-surgical pain -Fibromyalgia
Each TENS system includes a stimulator, lead wires and electrodes. The stimulator emits a small amount of electric current according to the user’s settings. The current travels through the wires to the electrodes, which in turn transmit it through the skin and to
the underlying nerves. The user can personalize the pulse frequency (the current’s strength, measured in megahertz or MHz), as well as the pulse length.
Most TENS units allow you to choose the stimulation mode as well. “Burst” consists in cycles of quick pulses followed by a rest period, with the cycles repeating over the duration of treatment. “Modulation” varies the pulse length and may combine it with the user’s settings (strength and width). This mode is often favoured by long-term TENS users to “confuse” the pain receptors in the brain so that they do not become desensitized to the TENS’s pain-relieving effects.
EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) uses tiny electric impulses to stimulate muscles. It has proven to be effective in preventing or reducing muscle atrophy, which is the loss of muscle tone often experienced after an injury or a surgery. In EMS, the pulses are timed by the device to rhythmically contract and relax the muscles, allowing them to be worked or toned. EMS also helps by increasing blood flow to the muscles, as well as increasing range of motion, muscle strength and endurance. It can help manage pain related to spastic, sore or tight muscles.
Simply put, TENS helps relieve certain types of chronic and acute pain by stimulating the nervous tissue, while EMS is designed to treat more of the muscle area than the nerves. Both rely on small electrical impulses delivered by a physiotherapy device via electrodes and can be an effective way to manage pain without medication. We recommend that you first consult wyth our healthcare professional to determine if TENS or EMS is a suitable therapeutic device for your health needs.
